Rights Respecting School
Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar Comprehensive School is a Rights Respecting School
What does this mean?
September 2022 marked the start of Ysgol Gyfun Tredegar Comprehensive School’s journey to becoming a Rights Respecting School. The award is issued by UNICEF UK to recognise schools that ensure learners receive the rights outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
In October 2022 we were honoured to be awarded the bronze “Rights Committed” Rights Respecting School Award in recognition of our work to date embedding children’s rights in all aspects of school life and as evidence of our commitment to this exciting journey. Following this, in May 2023 we received the Silver Rights Respecting School Award which recognises us as “rights committed”.
The ABCDE of rights
At YGTCS, we subscribe to the ‘ABCDE of Rights’. This model underpins everything that we do as a school.
School Charter
As part of our journey, our students have created a school charter which focuses on five UNCRC articles and explicitly outlines what is expected of students and staff in relation to those rights. Our school charter sets clear expectations in areas such as our curriculum, extra-curricular activities as well as protection from harm.
Right of the Fortnight
As part of our Rights Respecting School journey, we are committed to developing our understanding of children’s rights as a school community. This involves all staff, students, governors and parents. The Right of the Fortnight initiative aims to develop this understanding by focusing for a two-week period on a selected article from the UNCRC. Often, the right will be studied in conjunction with a notable date, such as World Book Day, International Women’s Day or National Holocaust Memorial Day, or Earth Day.
