Trips and Enrichment

Trips:

Spain (currently Salou and Barcelona)

This trip runs every other year and is open to all pupils studying Spanish. We currently stay in Salou and then do a day trip to Barcelona. In Barcelona, we visit Nou Camp, Poble Espanyol, castell Montjuic and a local Spanish mall. We also spend a day in the theme park Port Aventura. The rest of the time is spent visiting local sites and shops in Salou.

London

This trip ran in December 2019 and we are looking to run it again in December 2021. This trip involves a one-night stay in London. As part of the trip, pupils get to experience Spanish culture through flamenco and cajón drumming. We also visit some of the local museums; we go out for dinner and to see a show. Finally, there is an opportunity for pupils to do some Christmas shopping. This trip is open to all pupils studying Spanish.

Tapas

In year 8 and as part of the GCSE curriculum we learn about tapas. As such, we run a trip to a tapas bar in July for our year 8, 9, 10 and 11 pupils. They have the opportunity to try a range of tapas dishes and practise their Spanish.

Pupil Language Ambassador Training

In year 9, our pupils can apply to become Language Ambassadors. If their application is successful, they will then spend a day being trained with Language Ambassadors from other schools.

Y Pant School

This year our year 10 had the opportunity to participate in a GCSE workshop in Y Pant Comprehensive School. This was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to practise their spoken Spanish with native speakers and A level students. We hope that this will be run annually.

Outside Speakers:

Student Mentor

For the last few years, we have been part of the Cardiff University Mentor Programme. This involves a university student coming in for several weeks to talk to groups of year 8 pupils about the importance of Spanish and about life at university.

Spanish Singer

We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to have a Spanish singer come in and teach our year 9. They learnt about Christmas in Spain and how to dance and sing in Spanish!

Tim Penn

Over the last five years, we have had Tim Penn visit year 8 to talk about languages and how he uses them in his job. Pupils always enjoy his visit and he helps them to thing about the international element of many jobs.

School Events:

European Day of Languages

We celebrate European Day of Languages on or around 26th September. We put on competitions for year 7 and the canteen creates a European themed menu.
